Report on the Stratocruiser.
Today the first Boeing Stratocruisers are being prepared for rigorous flight testing, while the additional airplanes on order for six major airlines are moving rapidly toward completion. Fifty-five are being built for transcontinental and intercontinental service. Several in final assembly are shown above.
Even so, it will be several months before you ride in a Stratocruiser. First comes Boeing's own extensive flight test program. Every characteristic of performance, every compo
nent is being subjected to exacting tests. Then the great, twin-decked ship will undergo the new, rigid CAA certification tests.
The Stratocruiser's basic design features, including wing, landing gear and tail surfaces have already flown millions of miles in training and combat on the B-29 Superfortress. The Army’s C-97 Stratofreighter — military prototype of the Stratocruiser — has been flying over two years and holds the coast-to-coast transport speed record of 6 hours, 4 minutes.
Behind the Stratocruiser stands Boeing’s unmatched experience in designing and building four-engine aircraft; more than 10 years’ experience in altitude conditioning; broad experience in such related fields as acoustics, metallurgy, soundproofing, high-altitude flight. And finally the integrity of Boeing engineering and manufacturing as exemplified in the Stratoliner, transocean Clippers, the B-17 Flying Fortress and the B-29 Superfortress.

They’re making this flight for you.
This is no pleasure jaunt. What you see is a Boeing test-flight crew taking one of the new Stratocruisers up for another proving flight. In scores of such tests they've already affirmed the smooth-flying, easy-handling performance of the big plane.
This particular flight may be up into the substratosphere to prove the operation of the Stratocruiser’s air-conditioning system — the amazing system that will give you 6000-foot cabin comfort at 25,000 feet — sea-level at 15,000 feet.
Again, it may be a speed check on the twindecked giant's 340-mile-an-hour cruising speed. Or it may be for various tests on the four 3500-horsepower engines which make the Stratocruiser the most powerful transport in the skies.
Boeing is flying the Stratocruiser seven days a week in the most comprehensive proving program ever applied to any commercial aircraft. For you — the future Stratocruiser traveler — all of this rigorous testing means assured comfort, greater dependability.
Instead of luxurious passenger accommodations, the roomy interiors of Stratocruisers being tested are fitted with batteries of instruments. Literally, they are flying laboratories. Thousands of vital instrument readings are recorded on every test flight.

Where the wind bares its secrets
This picture was taken in the test section of Boeing’s wind tunnel — fastest privately owned, large-dimension wind tunnel in the world. It is an integral part of Boeing’s experimental facilities — the most extensive maintained by any aircraft manufacturer.
Here, new airplane designs pit strength and efficiency against man-made winds of tremendous force. Delicate instruments record accurately for engineers the effects of wind force on wings, flaps, nacelles, fuselage and tail surfaces of Boeing-designed planes.
Exhaustive research and careful testing such
as this helped give the great Boeing B-29 Superfortress — and its still more advanced successor, the B-50 — their peerless aerodynamic excellence. It hastened production of the revolutionary Boeing XB-47 jet bomber. And it has helped give the twin-deck Boeing Stratocruiser, now being flight-proved for the world’s leading airlines, its unparalleled aerodynamic efficiency.
Pre-flight testing in laboratory, wind tunnel and pressure chamber is just one reason why the Boeing name is symbolic of aviation leadership — why Boeing-built planes give you superior comfort, greater dependability.
This huge 24-foot fan in Boeing's "Cave of the Winds" is spun by an 18,000 horsepower motor and creates winds up to 800 miles an hour.
